If you’re reading or listening to this, you’re still breathing. Your butt is still here so the only thing that passed you by is death. Today is my birthday. I’m 65, officially a Sr. Citizen! Feels like a "rite of passage." Tuesdays are now officially "my day" - 10% off everything everywhere. Got a new wallet for all my new "old folks cards." Medi This & Medi That; Part A-Z, the red, white & blue card. I got 'em all.
I’ve been very vocal about my joy in celebrating 65, posting on various social media outlets. (Yeah, I’m a computer savvy 65. LOL!) The responses I’ve gotten are wonderful, the majority of which from people e-celebrating with me, for which I am crazy grateful. If you’re one of those persons, thank you sooooo much. I especially love the very gracious compliments that I don’t look my age. I laugh and think to myself, I may not look my age, but I have body parts that know exactly how old they are. I know what’s been fixed and what’s been patched. Except for the occasional “senior moments,” I don’t think my brain knows anything about “old.” I always feel like I’m keeping up with my mind. I suppose you can tell I have fun with myself.
There is, however, another group of people who hit my radar and my heart will not allow me to ignore. The ones who think life has passed them by, so they’re just passing time until their “number is called.” There are a lot of those folks out there and, guess what, all of them aren’t old. I really do get it, but that doesn’t have to be the end of the story unless you want it to be.
Here are three things to think about:
1. Age does not call the shots. You do.
60 doesn’t mean it’s almost over. Retirement doesn’t mean stop working. Never stop being your best. Never give up your power to some invisible non-entity called age. Age does not define you. It only says how long you’ve been here. You have purpose, otherwise you would not be here.
2. Life is about choices. Re-Invent.
Everything is a choice. To do nothing is a choice. You are where you are because of the series of choices you’ve made. Don’t like where you are? Make some new choices. Figure out where you want to go. Consult with God. Be still and when the universe tells you to make the next turn (right or left), DO IT. Don’t question. Trust God. If you stay on the road you’ve been on – well – you know the idiom, “Do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you always got.” Yeah, but ...” “Yeah, but …” “Yeah, but …” Go ahead. “Yeah, but …” ‘til the cows come home. The fact doesn’t change. If you want something different, you must do something different.
3. Dream new dreams. The old one has aged out.
This is the biggie of them all. Broken dreams. Dreams that didn’t come true. That hurts, it’s discouraging and makes you want to quit. Many people do. Others spend their time trying to catch up to yesterday. That’s a race you cannot win. Yesterday is gone. Whatever didn’t happen, didn’t happen.
Think of it this way. If yesterday’s dream had come true, it would be outdated by now. It would be time to upgrade anyway. Dream new dreams. Ask God for a new vision.
Life has not passed you by. Everyday is a new beginning. Start over again and make it be what you want it to be. What have you got to lose. It’s your life. It ain’t over ‘til it’s over. Take control. Just Thinking
