If you view the Bible as an authoritative text, have you ever noticed how many times Jesus asked questions? 307 times. Asking questions was central to Jesus' teachings. Assuming he always knew the answers before asking the questions, then what was the point of asking? There could be only one reason. To make the person(s) think.
Questions have enormous power. A question causes time to stand still if only for a nanosecond, because a question demands a response; not necessarily an answer, but a response. A question requires thought both by the asker and the responder. A question can have a kaleidoscope of motives. It can be intrusive, indicting, entrapping, tricking, innocently seeking, even motivational.
Let’s consider the idea of motivation. There’s ongoing debate about whether a person can be motivated by external stimuli, such as motivational speakers, mentors, books, programs, etc. That debate will probably be settled in another lifetime. For now, this thought wants to turn your attention internally. There’s no getting around it. We are ultimately accountable to ourselves. Yes, we are accountable to a spouse, significant other, family to some degree, accountability partners if you have such, but the ultimate and non-negotiable accountability is to oneself. If at any time you ascribe final accountability to anyone or anything outside of yourself, you’re deceiving yourself. You’re playing games with yourself.
If someone asks you an accountability question about something you promised to do, you can choose to respond with a lame excuse or a lie. The person asking the question may or may not know you’re lying. Depending on your depth of character and personal integrity, you can walk away, not flinch or care if the other person knows. But you know. You always know.
The one person you cannot lie to is yourself. Well, that isn’t quite true, is it? You can most certainly lie to yourself and convince yourself to believe the lie you’re telling yourself. It happens a lot with people who just go about life with no lock down on real goals for which to hold themselves accountable.
External accountability sounds good but it’s too easily side stepped. You can avoid questions from accountability partners by using caller ID. Avoiding accountability to God is just way too easy. You can use that lame excuse,” God knows my heart,” or even worse, lie and lean on “forgiveness.”
If you aren’t serious about a goal, accomplishment, or change in your life; if you’ve set no bar for yourself, no intention concerning your actions, then you can, indeed, excuse yourself, lie to yourself and believe your lie.
BUT if you understand the power within that you have access to at any time; the Infinite Intelligence within yourself; if you set a bar for yourself, if you set your intentions for the day, the week, the month, the year, the decade; when you accept that you are the master of your fate, and the captain of your soul, you don’t even try to lie to yourself, because you know the value of who you are. You will ask yourself the questions of accountability. You don’t think about lying to yourself. You don’t need incentives like treating yourself if you stick to your plan. This is your life. It’s your plan. You don’t need to listen to 25 motivational videos to keep you going (although they are occasionally helpful). This is your life.
It’s you and the power of the Universe within. BAM! Let’s go. When you lag a little, slip and fall (and you will); Get up. Just get up. Use the power of question. Ask yourself:
The questions have power and make sense if you have plans, goals, visions, dreams. You don’t need to take a long time analyzing, scrutinizing, or feeling bad. Just get up and keep it moving.
“What if I don’t have goals or plans?” “ What if I have no dreams or vision for my life?” Then the questions are equally powerful for you in suggesting that this is a great time to set your life on a new path.
