“What Would Jesus Do,” was a hugely popular slogan about 20 years ago. No disrespect intended with my use of the word “slogan,” but I’m confident you’ll see what I mean much before you get to the end.
WWJD hit the western world just before Christmas and it went “Christian-net viral,” before we even had viral. It was everywhere from Christian bookstores in the malls to any willing shop that had a window; on wristbands, bookmarks, bumper stickers, decals, T-shirts, mugs, baby clothes. WWJD was everywhere.
It was such an amazing idea, a gentle nudge, a non-threatening reminder to question yourself in the moment before a decision, the moment before reacting, before you slap the crap out of someone who probably desperately needs you to do it. (Strike that last one.) The operative word is “before. “Before” Before” “Before.”
Too bad the slogan faded into the marketing abyss because if taken seriously, it had the potential to be enormously effective as it called those who had a spiritual ear to a consciousness of that which the Apostle Paul was trying to make Christians understand. The Christ Mind, God’s Mind within you. You have access to the very Infinite Intelligence, the Divine Creative Mind that created you.
So, when a person responds to their less than Christ like behavior by saying, “After all, I’m not Jesus,” that is true but only true in part. Paul writes in I Corinthians 2:16 “… But we have the mind of Christ.”
He goes on to say in Philippians 2:5, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. Let: allow, don’t resist, don’t hinder, be open to, invite, … all pointing to the idea that one has the power to decide.
In the traditional approach to understanding the God of the Old Testament, knowing what is taught about that God, what we know about ourselves and what we know that God knows about us, very few people would want to encounter that God. Right?
In the New Testament, along came Jesus. We find him talking to God, praying to God, being alone with God, praying to God about us (John 17), wanting for us to have the same relationship with God that he had. Then 60 years after Jesus left the earth, Paul came along, a man who never met Jesus personally, and wrote that the mind of Christ is in you; that one needs to allow and be open to the Christ Mind within.
Jesus, the Great Example of God and relationship with God, everywhere in every word, and action, always connecting the dots for us to understand the Laws of the Universe, or how God works. Every major religion acknowledges Jesus, at the very least, as Master Teacher or Great Teacher or the Greatest Teacher.
How can you not be blown away by the mind, the Christ Mind in the man Jesus? How can you not be blown away that the Bible says that very same Mind, the Christ Mind is in you.
You will miss what will change your life forever if you perceive God as out there somewhere and Jesus as a phenomenal one-time event. If you believe that your body is the temple of God, then, necessarily God is within. That’s the quiet voice we hear inside. (You know, the one we ignore and often later say, “something told me.”)
If you believe that Jesus had an inextricable connection with God, and that the Mind of Christ is within, as Paul states, then we have access to the Divine Mind. You know what to do because that still small voice inside whispers the wisdom you need before and even in the moment you need it.
