My husband and I were invited to a holiday cabaret style event. We rarely get out socially, so I was rather excited about going. In the old days, cabarets were dress up (dress way up) events. Since I’m unashamedly “ole school.” I love glitter and glam and red-carpet clothes that nowadays would be totally out of place – but I don’t care. Not wanting to stand out in baby boomer glitter, I chose a dress down outfit, accessorized with expensive jewelry. All that glittered was real gold and diamonds but in a culture of rhinestone eyelashes, junk jewelry, and knock offs, very few know the difference or care. No one, that is, except me.
It was a BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle, BYOF (Bring Your Own Food) event. That seemed like fun. We brought a 150 count shrimp platter, china, gold plated flatware, and satin napkins. My friends chuckled; one saying, “That’s just Carol.” It was indeed because I treat myself well.
Avoiding the ugly word “hate,” I’ll simply say I strongly dislike paper plates, plastic utensils and red plastic cups make my very soul dizzy. My feelings are not in any way a negative judgement against the use of paper and plastic tableware. Some of it is very pretty. I just prefer otherwise, and I choose an alternative whenever possible. I treat myself well.
The point is this. Do you treat yourself well? In what ways do you do that? Have you ever sat down and really thought about it? The Golden Rule, paraphrased from the Bible, that most everyone knows is:
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
Pretty straight forward, right? Treat people the way you want to be treated. The question I have for you today is: Do you do unto yourself as you would have others do unto you? Do you treat yourself the way you want to be treated? Or, do you treat others well and hope they treat you well in return? This isn’t a discussion as to the validity of The Golden Rule, “Do unto others …,” or the Law of Reciprocity. This thought and the praxis of it is far more difficult, yet so simple to mentally comprehend. I call it THE RHODIUM RULE,
TREAT YOURSELF WELL
Treat Yourself The Way You Want To Be Treated and feel OK about it.
We’re taught to put others first, make sure everyone else is happy, don’t offend or hurt another’s feelings. All good, kindhearted stuff, BUT, as it becomes a practice, it also becomes a lifestyle; a lifestyle that results in the homelessness of the self.
This is bigger than getting your hair done, a full body massage or treating yourself to a special meal. This is about you making decisions that are in your best interest, We’re confronted with contrasts every day and dependent upon what’s programmed in your subconscious mind, your historical database, you may need to reprogram it, update the software of your subconscious mind to have the life you want.

The way you treat yourself is observable. People treat you (or use you) the way you treat yourself. Never assume they know. Never assume others share your values, perspectives and priorities. This is your life. Create it the way you want it. No one will do that for you. They’re far too busy creating their own.
