Zacchaeus, a teeny little Shih Tzu, six weeks old, runt of the litter, barely the size of a soda can, jerked his head and body so violently when the leash (string) was put on, that his owner feared he’d snap his tiny neck. Completely out of control, conscious only of himself, no awareness of the vastness and order in the physical world around him. He was totally ignorant of the life sustaining elements (air, water, etc.) being provided for him. No understanding of his size in relationship to the world or his total dependency on the one against whom he was struggling. His only goal was to be free of the leash – BUT – to do what? He didn’t even know. At the end of every walk, Zacchaeus just passed out, exhausted from his own fight.
If his owner didn’t fill his water dish, mix his special formula, or take him to the vet regularly because of his tiny size and fragile breeding, he wouldn’t live. Yet, Zacchaeus fought with all his strength against the very hand orchestrating the world around him to keep him alive.
Why would the owner deal with such aggravation from this little furry runt? There were lots of furry little dogs, just as cute, and easier to train. Why deal with this little dude, whose off the chart stubbornness was stronger and lasted longer than any other dog the owner had in the past.
Zacchaeus was a gift from a beloved friend, so the owner wanted to give the best effort possible to this “project.” The children were promised a dog – so here it was; three tons of raw will in a three-pound body.
The little dog’s purpose was to bring joy, laughter, delight, fun and companionship to the household. Hmm, purpose. What could bring this little dog to his purpose? Patience, love, and discipline? It took longer than most dogs, but eventually Zacchaeus submitted to the leash, settled into a world of structure, and life was bliss for him and everyone around him.
There are several spiritual and behavioral avenues one can take in this story contingent upon the point one wants to make. Go with me on this one. Let’s step back at take a look at Zacchaeus’ story in the human scenario.
There is precise and involuntary order in the cosmos, the speed of light and sound, planetary rotations and movement, laws such as gravity that maintain stability of movement. In the earth there are times and seasons and synchronizations of planets and elements. Everywhere there is exact order, even in the physical body. But, in the human will, there is no such involuntary order or cooperation, only chaos when the will is resistant to the order.
There is always more going on than what we see. The Bible says “all things work together for our good.” All things, everything working, orderly happenings, purposeful activity, most of which we cannot see. Whether you think it’s divine predestined purpose or God orchestrating things for a purpose you desire - either way, all things are working in your favor.
Eventually Zacchaeus surrendered to the leash. For us there is no such leash, but there is surrender to that which is working on our behalf. There is purposeful release from struggle, the willful allowing of good, and a settling into the peace that is always there. It is our choice.
