This week I will tell you a most wonderful true story.
Once upon a time there was a girl named Enora. Enora was a God conscious person, but, like many people, at times she felt God to be close but just out of reach, in sight but blurred and out of focus, comprehendible, but not quite.
She read and studied a lot about God and the Spirit realm. The more she discovered, the more she desired to know. The more she came to know, there was still the empty awfulness in the tiniest of distance. The intellectual pursuit was surely wonderful but subject to error, interpretation, and misinterpretation. She wanted not just to see God presence elsewhere, but to know it however she would know it. That was nebulous because she wanted something she was unable to intellectually define or articulate. On her worst day she knew God was there and pretty sure she’d seen God a few times but still she needed something else.
Enora had a pretty disciplined meditation practice but she noticed feeling less enthusiastic about it. There were depressing things going on but that never interfered with her mental attitude for meditation.
On this certain day a voice inside said, “Come on. I’ll take you to a concert. Choose whichever artist you want, and we’ll go to the concert now.” Well, that’s odd, she thought, but ok. She chose to listen to an artist whose music she favored for personal time.
There was an orchestra playing and at first the music was beautiful, as it always had been. Then, quite suddenly, something changed. It was unsettling. She began to hear the instruments playing their parts separately. The beautiful song with which she was familiar seemed to be chopped into parts; violins playing different arrangements, cellos, flutes, xylophones, piano, saxophone, … It toggled between the entire orchestra and the parts a few times until she noticed how amazingly beautiful each section sounded alone, and breathtaking all together.
She knew what was happening. With huge excitement she said to Spirit, “Is that you playing that!!!?” Section after section, it was the same, “You’re playing that!!” “That’s you isn’t it!!?” “You’re playing every instrument. You’re playing every part. Through these people you are playing. You brought me to your concert to see you, to hear you play.”
Spirit responded: “Yes, I am playing every instrument, but not through everyone. I can play only through those who allow me to do so.”
We are created in the image of God. We are unique expressions of God’s self. That is to say, God expresses through us, as us. As we give ourselves to the perfecting of the gifts we possess, we also allow the excellence of the indwelling Spirit to emerge in execution.
We’ve seen this in the super star athletes whose moves defy the natural laws of physics.
We’ve seen it in extraordinary dancers who give practice in exchange for excellence such that during their performance they surrender and allow the dance to do the dance.
We’ve seen it (heard it) in the vocalists whose voices charm the world.
How do you allow Spirit to express Itself through you? What are you giving in exchange, then allowing the manifestation of Excellence through you?
