Anyone who knows me or meets me soon learns I love dogs and sushi. Let’s put sushi on the side for now. That’s a story for another time. This is about a dog (or that’s how it starts out).
Somehow the question just rolls off my tongue, “Do you have a dog?” While I’m fascinated by pedigrees, mixed/mutts/mongrels, and what I call designer breeds, the most beautiful of all on the planet is the Great Dane.
Years ago, I heard about a Great Dane whose owner was abusive. The moment I saw him I felt I should take him home. After all, I didn’t seek him out, he was brought to my attention so I should rescue him, right? BUT wait, as absolutely beautiful as he was, this dude had issues. He was 18 months old, always been confined in a 6’ x 6’ wooden stall outside (dead winter), not house broken, afraid of everybody, especially men; just a total emotional wack job.
I visited him daily for two weeks, but he showed no interest in me at all. A friend, an, expert on Danes, drove over an hour a few times to observe, rightly said, “He’s a beauty but this is more than a pet. This is a project.”
Every visit ended the same, with me walking away uncertain if I should or even could take this on. My youngest son said, “Mom, you want this dog? Make a decision.”
On my friend’s last visit, without words, he reached in his jacket pocket and gave me the training choker pictured above. I’ll never forget that moment. I walked over to the stall and said to the Dane, “You have no interest in coming to live with me, so this is my last visit. Good-bye.” As I walked away, he barked with that signature Great Dane roar. That’s all I needed. I took him home that day.
Think about a moment. How long is it? Is it an instant? How long is an instant? How much time is a moment? Is it measured in seconds, nanoseconds? Perhaps it’s more easily comprehensible with a visual description, a flash of light. As brief as it is, it’s long enough to contain a life changing direction or re-direction energy.
I’d had bi-lateral knee replacement the previous summer. Exercise was painful, so I stopped doing it, gained weight, legs got weaker, sluggish most of the time and depression trying to get my address. Then along came this beautiful, emotionally disturbed, not house broken, 160 lb Great Dane. I had to walk him several times a day in the cold and snow, whatever it took to transform him into a house pet. (You just can’t have an not-house broken Great Dane living in the house.) Trainers said it couldn’t be done, but I did it.
By the spring that year, he was different and so was I. He was the perfect house pet. I lost weight, legs got strong, energy came back, I got my life back. I got “me” back.
At first glance, it’s easy to see that in four months the Dane turned my world around, but that is only true in part.
The reality is my world turned completely around in the single moment of decision. One day my son said, “Mom, make a decision;” on another day my friend put the training choker in my hand. There was one single instant, that nanosecond flash of time when I made the decision that ultimately turned my life around. I could have made a different decision and my life would have remained the way it was.
Each moment is a once in a lifetime moment. In a span of time equal to a flash of light, a single moment is pregnant with possibilities beyond imagination triggered by a single decision that can change your life forever.
Don’t underestimate a moment. In a moment you can plant a seed that will bring you a lifetime of joy and prosperity or another seed you’ll spend a lifetime trying to forget.
Each moment is a once in a lifetime moment. Each moment holds your life’s potentials. Each moment holds many destinies, each to be set into motion by a single decision. A moment, a choice, a destiny.
