Many of us, if not all, have experienced the misfortune of someone saying something demeaning to us. Whether from the cesspool of ignorance and malice, or absence of malice, the result is the same because words have power. More precisely, the bible says, the power of death and life are in the power of the tongue. Once the word goes out, it does what it does. If the person sending out a damaging word apologizes, that’s nice, but the damage is done. Apologies do not heal.
“Time heals all wounds,” is a myth. Time gives distance from the pain and conscious memory of the words, but the effects are still very much alive in the subconscious mind, and doing it’s dirty work.
The intent of this thought is not to focus on the person sending out the lethal words, for they may truly regret their words if they are aware of the damage. The focus of this thought is on the person having received the damaging words, and about the motivation to heal. Motivation is a strange word to use when thinking about healing brokenness. BUT – it is exactly the right word. Healing doesn’t just happen; you must make it happen. Motivation comes from within. That’s the place the wounded soul must begin. Not your fault, I get it, nevertheless, we must heal ourselves.
In Hinduism there’s a concept called “Dharma.” It means 'duty', 'virtue', 'morality', and it refers to the power which upholds the universe and society. Dharma is the power that maintains society, it makes the grass grow, the sun shine, and makes us moral people (gives humans the opportunity to act virtuously). Dharma is universal but it is also particular and operates within concrete circumstances. Each person therefore has their own dharma. We have different obligations and duties.
Example: We all agree that killing is wrong. Yet, a soldier in battle must fight as it is his/her duty to fight with detachment from the results of his/her actions and within the rules of warfare. (a soldiers’ dharma)
Correct action in accordance with dharma is also understood as service to humanity and to God, not to act according to one's own dharma is wrong.
Here’s where it gets tough, beloved. No matter what has happened to you, who said what, when or why, it is our obligation to heal ourselves so that we can fulfill our dharma, our obligations and duties to ourselves, society, and God. Some people have big dharmas, some, not so big. How big is your dharma?
When you have something inside that is trying to emerge, know that it is God seeking to express God’s Self through you. Let that sink in. Start at the grassroots level and ask yourself:
It takes courage, but you must answer those question to begin to move on.
