Have you ever tried to make a deal with God? Maybe you wanted something, and you told God:
Do WHAT???!!! Really!!!
Whether deeply sincere, or just having a moment, doesn’t really matter. God is GOD. He doesn’t bargain. Has no need to. Why would he? He’s got the power of life and death and everything else. What does God have to win or lose whether you stop sinning, start being nicer, go to church, Bible Study, or give him back a dime of the money he gave to you in the first place. You should be doing that anyway.
In a bargaining or bartering situation, both parties stand to gain, or it isn’t a real deal. What do we have that God needs? Respectfully, who do you think you are, bargaining with the one who has it all anyway. You got no chips, Boo.
A bargain with God is actually blackmail because the covert message is, if God doesn’t do what you want, you can always testify that he didn’t, or that you’ll continue on the path you’re on. Even that presupposes that God is afraid of your testimony. You trying to pull God into a mobster thing?
God knows from the beginning we can’t keep a New Year’s resolution so why would he enter into an agreement in which he has nothing to gain. Even if you could pull it off, only you gain from the deal. But such a proposition is a set up for failure. That’s why the Bible says don’t do it. Besides, God wouldn’t do you that way. He wouldn’t allow you to set yourself up like that. Ok, you get my point.
If there’s something you need to change, then there’s a better way to approach it. First, ask yourself, honestly, “Do I really need God for this?” Everything doesn’t require divine intervention. Sometimes that’s our little trick to leave things as they are (I’m waiting on the Lord). Sometimes you really don’t need God to change something. Just stop doing wrong stuff. Stop planning it. Stop nurturing it. Stop feeding it. Of course, it’s not that easy, but you can do it if you want to. Let’s be honest, we do just about whatever we want to do; whatever we set our minds to.
Wherever you are, whatever the situation, whatever shape you’re in, God’s in it with you. He’ll charge you nothing to get you out of it and on your feet again.
Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life. Isaiah 43:4 KJV
In other words, God is saying, step into that honorable place and there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for you. No bargaining required.
It only takes that one moment of decision, that split second that you change your mind. That’s really what the bottom line of repentance is. Peel back the layers of emotion, regret or remorse, repentance at the root just means, you’ve changed your mind.
Change your mind in the right direction and the Universe will begin moving on your behalf, moving the wrong influences out of your way; bringing opportunities and the right people into your path. It begins with you taking control of what and how you think.
There’s a power we have that goes untapped. It’s the power to think. If we think the right thoughts, the right things will begin to happen. If we connect our power to think into the power source, the Universal Mind, then vision becomes clearer. Options become more mature, beyond little weeny efforts at trying to make a deal with nothing to trade.
Stop listening to what everyone else thinks. They’re struggling just like you. You have the mind of Christ. Use it.
