Zacchaeus (aka Zacch), a six-week-old, runt of the litter, Shih Tzu, was barely the size of a soda can. Because of his tiny size and fragile breeding, he needed special formula, vitamins, and frequent trips to the vet so he’d survive. Although he was tiny, he still needed to be taught basic manners and trained to the leash. When the custom sized collar and leash were put on him, he jerked his head and body so violently that it looked as though he’d snap his tiny neck. He refused to walk forward, instead pulled against the leash like he was in a tug of war with an 18-wheeler. Zacch had a three ton will wrapped in a three pound body having no understanding of his size in relationship to the world, or his total dependence on the ones against whom he struggled. He was a puppy, a baby of his species and he responded to the world in the appropriate level of immaturity and lack of discipline. Day after day he fought with all his strength against the very hands keeping him alive.
Zacch’s story is reflective of our relationship to God. How unaware we are of dangers and threats beyond the scope of comprehension. How fragile we are that a word can break our heart, crush self-esteem or scar deeply. How vulnerable we are that a microscopic organism can render us helpless or leave us lifeless. Yet we struggle against the power that sees beyond that which our eyes can see, leads through the dark uncertainties of the invisible landscape of life; our very provider and protector.
It took almost two weeks for Zacch to calm down and surrender to the hand holding the leash. People, on the other hand, often take years to surrender to the hand of God, and some never do. The un-surrendered, undisciplined life is a life of struggle, defeat and mediocrity. The unteachable repeat the mistakes of others, never reaching their divine potential. Some never get to experience the freedom in surrender and the comfort in a disciplined life. Some are delayed or never get to know the blessings around the corner because their struggle with “self” and to keep “self” holds them in the realm of nowhere.
Living the life of spirit centrality, a life governed by the laws of the universe to which all things are subject, doesn’t make sense to the mind acculturated and in sync with the wisdom and “how-to(s),” of the world. How can there be freedom in surrender or comfort in discipline? How can struggle (or “the grind”) produce defeat and mediocrity?
Surrender is a conscious decision to “give up,” to acknowledge the power against which you struggle is greater than that which you possess. If the greater power is your Benefactor, then there is freedom from and no need for struggle. The comfort in discipline is understanding how life works and pulling oneself into alignment with the flow of the laws of the higher life. In other words, not giving into the human temptation to reinvent that which is already perfect and eternally in motion.
If you’re willing to give it an honest second thought, God will reveal it. I’ll give you a hint. If you readjust your perception of power, where it resides, and what it costs; if you refocus on the source of real power, you’ll find the power point or the access point to the power of which we all seek; to be what we aspire, manifest what we desire and accomplish the good that we want.
